Deferred Compensation

Deferred Compensation is a form of employee compensation that is earned or allocated during one period but paid at a later date, subject to the applicable employment terms, plan rules, company policies, and legal requirements. It may include deferred bonuses, incentives, commissions, retention payments, or other compensation arrangements where payment is postponed until a specified future date or event. In an HRMS and payroll system, deferred compensation can be recorded separately from regular earnings, tracked against eligibility or vesting conditions, and incorporated into payroll when it becomes payable. Proper management of deferred compensation helps organizations maintain accurate compensation records, manage future payment obligations, support payroll planning, and provide employees with transparent information about their compensation.
