Break Time

Break Time is the scheduled or authorized period during an employee's working hours when they are permitted to temporarily stop work for rest, meals, refreshments, or personal needs. Organizations typically define break durations and eligibility based on company policies, shift schedules, employment agreements, and applicable labour laws. Common examples include lunch breaks, tea breaks, coffee breaks, and short rest intervals. In a Human Resource Management System (HRMS), break time is managed through attendance policies, biometric devices, mobile attendance, shift scheduling, and time-tracking modules. HRMS automatically records break-in and break-out times, calculates total break duration, identifies excessive or missed breaks, integrates break data with payroll and overtime calculations, and generates reports to improve workforce productivity, policy compliance, and operational efficiency.
